Been thinking a lot about this as well. Do we return to patronage, where we pay for things just to support a creator we admire and not for an exchange of value? Does advertising become the dominant way to monetize again?
looking at the problems of modern opensource "pay for things just to support a creator we admire and not for an exchange of value" does not look like a sustainable model in general.
I’m excited about the return of creative expression. I’m almost fascinated by the economic side of things. I haven’t spent enough time considering the impact of literally anyone having the agency to build software for themselves. In the consumer space, what’s still worth paying for? Tools like REPL.it, Cursor, v0 (the shovel makers) are in the best position. For $20 a month, you have hundreds of custom SaaS products that will never increase in price.
This is so insightful! I’m building an app for myself too. May scale in future if it comes out great.
That’s great to hear !! Message me if you are interested to chat, Yash.
Thank you for this, that’s really motivating 🙂
Thanks Damien. Glad this piece inspires you to build your own app !! 🔥 let’s go.
> We're creating what I call the "personal software economy"
If everyone builds there own software, where is the economy? Where are the added value, margins for the business and who are the paying customers?

When the market is over saturated users will face the paradox of choice which will make it harder for anyone to commit to any software.
